CBP One Becomes CBP Home: The Self-Deportation App

Few symbols captured the 2025 immigration reversal better than a smartphone app. The CBP One app had been the digital front door of the prior era, letting migrants schedule appointments to be processed at the border. In 2025 the same technology was repurposed and rebranded as CBP Home, a tool built not to let people in but to help them leave. The transformation was as symbolic as it was practical.

What CBP One did

Launched and then expanded after 2021, CBP One let migrants in Mexico book appointments at ports of entry, where many were then processed and, in large numbers, released into the United States to pursue their cases. Supporters called it an orderly alternative to chaotic crossings. Critics called it a scheduling system for what was still, in effect, mass parole, a way to manage the flow rather than to stop it. Either way, it processed enormous numbers of people.

The switch to CBP Home

On Day One of the new administration, CBP One appointment scheduling was shut off, canceling existing appointments instantly. Months later the platform reemerged as CBP Home, with a very different purpose. The centerpiece was a self-deportation feature that let people in the country illegally notify the government of their intent to depart and register their departure.

The self-deportation pitch

The administration's message was blunt: leave on your own terms now, or risk arrest, detention, and a formal removal order later. Voluntary departure through the app was framed as preserving some future eligibility and avoiding the harshest bars that come with a formal removal. The government later publicized stipends and free travel to encourage people to use it, arguing this was more humane and far cheaper than large-scale detention and deportation.

What this means for you

CBP Home is aimed at people without lawful status, and the decision to use it is serious and legal, not one to make from an app alone. If you are weighing it:

For people pursuing legal status, the CBP One to CBP Home story is a vivid illustration of how fast the ground can shift. A program that felt permanent to hundreds of thousands became a departure tool within months. The durable lesson is the one that runs through this whole era: build your future on lawful, stable status, not on programs that can be reversed with a software update.
