The TN in 2024: What Actually Happened

The TN visa rarely makes headlines, which is part of its charm, but 2024 brought the category its most significant administrative attention in years. USCIS published consolidated policy manual guidance on TN eligibility, and the April fee rule raised the cost of the petition-based route. Through it all, the fundamental deal held: qualified Canadian and Mexican professionals with real job offers kept getting to work fast.

USCIS wrote the TN rulebook down

In early 2024, USCIS added dedicated TN guidance to its policy manual, consolidating how officers should evaluate the category. The guidance addressed the professional occupation list, credential requirements, employer arrangements, and eligibility nuances such as self-employment limits. Two aspects stood out:

Written rules beat folklore. The TN had long run on port-of-entry custom; putting standards on paper was a win for consistency and the rule of law.

Fees rose on the petition route

The government-wide fee rule effective April 1, 2024 raised the Form I-129 fee for TN petitions filed with USCIS, to roughly $1,015 for larger employers with discounts for small employers and nonprofits, plus the new asylum program fee on many employer filings. The border route's economics barely changed: Canadians applying at a port of entry still paid modest application fees. Predictably, cost-conscious employers leaned further toward port-of-entry and consular processing where cases were straightforward.

Business as usual, in the best sense

Operationally, 2024 was smooth. Canadians enjoyed same-day adjudication at land ports and preclearance airports. Mexican TN visa applicants saw generally manageable consular waits. Healthcare and engineering demand stayed strong, and the H-1B system's continued tightness, even after its lottery integrity reforms, kept pushing employers toward the treaty category for eligible hires. The TN remained uncapped, lottery-free, and renewable in three-year increments.

What this means for you

Applying the 2024 developments practically:

2024 left the TN stronger than it found it: same speed, same merit-based core, but with clearer written standards and a modernized fee structure. For North American professionals, it remained the most efficient legal work route in the U.S. system, proof that when categories are well-defined and verified, immigration can be both fast and orderly.
